If This Is Not Life, Then What Do You Call It?
There are seasons where life tests you beyond measure.
I faced countless storms in just one stretch of time:
Admitted to the hospital three times, fighting to heal.
My children fell sick, one after another, just as one recovered, another went down.
A school I had worked so hard to place them in, after buying every requirement, suddenly shut its doors.
Evicted from my home, I now sleep inside a container shop.
Food is scarce. Each day is a gamble.
When school resumes, I find myself caught between two choices — do I pay my fees (my life long dream) or do I use money to bring back electricity so my kids and I can survive?
Even the little I tried to hold on to has been taken:
🐍 A snake bit my goats.
🐇 My rabbits die mysteriously.
🌱 I farmed twice in a year, and both times, the crops dried up with the rain that never came.
Darkness surrounds me — not just in spirit, but in reality. No light, no power. I can’t even charge my laptop to study. To charge my phone, I walk to neighbours and each time, it feels like I’m burdening them.
And yet, in that same darkness, people still come knocking on my door asking for help. Imagine the irony: you are empty, yet you must find a way to pour into others. Who watches over the watchman?
And as I hold on to a thin thread called hope, there are others still trying to pull me down trying to destroy a soul that is already fighting with everything it has to stand.
People say, “The hand that does not work, does not eat.” But do they know the whole story?
Do they know about the sickness, the eviction, the darkness, the hunger, the losses, the endless cycle of struggle? Survivor leaders are going through
Never judge someone you have not walked a mile in their shoes.
Never condemn a soul you don’t understand.
Because sometimes, survival itself is work.
If this is not life, then tell me — what do you call it????
